if you use a cliche that sounds good in a poem, does that automatically make the poem bad? or just make the person feel really bad when someone tells them that? :(

some teachers preach loudly against cliche, and it's good to shy away from it, but it's also up to the person and how one chooses to utilize it. to get to the point, some people can use cliche and it works. some can't.
if they can handle criticism, you could gently suggest they try rephrasing it or using a thesaurus, or tell them to try saying it in a more unique way. if they're not so good with criticism, then let them keep it as it is....
